[ARCHIVED] Tree of the Month for November 2020

November 2020 Resized

The North Myrtle Beach Tree City Board selected a Live Oak as its tree of the month for November. The massive tree stands at 404 39th Avenue South, the home of Curtis and Jenny Doscher and their three children.

The Doschers relNovember 2020 - 3 Resizedocated from Pennsylvania to North Myrtle Beach because of a job promotion opportunity for Curtis with his employer, the Wyndham.  They purchased their home about two years ago, renovated the inside, and moved in with their children.

Jenny, who nominated their tree for the Tree of the Month award, says the Live Oak was one of the things that attracted them to the property. The family enjoys using the swing that hangs from one of its limbs.

Live Oaks are native to North Myrtle Beach and thrive in our climate.  They can grow to 60 feet tall and at their largest span more than 100 feet from limb tip to limb tip.

Historically, their dense wood made them the lumber of choice for bracing ship hulls. Their wood is rarely used for making furniture because it twists and curves as it dries.November 2020 2 - Sized

Property owners and developers interested in learning more about how they can preserve trees on their property are encouraged to contact the North Myrtle Beach Tree City Board at nmbtreeboard@nmb.us

ABOUT THE TREE OF THE MONTH AWARD PROGRAM

The Tree City Board began its Tree of the Month program in 2010 in order to recognize preserved trees in the city and those who care for them. The program also helps highlight the many benefits trees offer in our daily lives.

If you think you have the biggest, prettiest, or most unusual tree in North Myrtle Beach, or that your tree has a unique story attached to it, the Tree City Board encourages you to contact Parks & Grounds Superintendent Jim Grainger at (843) 280‐5571 or via email at nmbtreeboard@nmb.us.
