[ARCHIVED] KING TIDES TO BRING LOCALIZED FLOODING

KING TIDE ALERT

KING TIDES ALERT

Kings Tides* will impact the North Myrtle Beach area from Thursday, December 2 through Tuesday, December 7, with the highest tides occurring on December 4 and December 5.

These high tides can cause flooding in low-lying areas of the city, and can also cause beach erosion.

Homeowners in low-lying areas that flood during King Tides should secure outdoor furniture, garbage cans, and other belongings, and move cars to higher ground.

The tide table offered by SCDHEC shows the following high tide levels:

Thursday, December 2: 6.5 feet

Friday, December 3: 6.8 feet

Saturday, December 4: 7 feet

Sunday, December 5: 7 feet

Monday, December 6: 6.8 feet

Tuesday, December 7: 6.6 feet

Further details are available at: https://scdhec.gov/sites/default/files/Library/CR-006341_2021.pdf

Motorists are advised to avoid traveling on flooded streets.

Those who do travel flooded streets should be aware that even at 5mph your vehicle creates a wake that can force more floodwater into homes, increasing the damage that high tides have already created. Consider these streets to be "No Wake" zones.

Motorists, particularly those who show a lack of concern for the potential damage that they can cause when traveling flooded streets, should be aware that North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Officers will monitor traffic in flood-prone areas.

*ABOUT KING TIDES: King Tides occur when the orbits and alignment of the Earth, moon, and sun combine to produce the greatest tidal effects of the year. King tides bring unusually high water levels, and they can cause local tidal flooding.
